Mastering choice no. 1 Take the already not very dynamic recording (all the drums/percussion are programmed) and throw the full weight of a digital compressor at it. Job done.

That's not mastering, it's being mastered - a pair of cloth ears. Call themselves engineers; they will be redundant shortly when Ozone introduces an AI mastering suite.

Remember when Crowded House's Woodface was one of the best sounding CDs you owned? Maybe it still is? Well, the voice is familiar (one generation apart) and so is the sound and quirky songwritingâmaybe more akin to Together Alone and later albumsâbut what happened to the audio?

Miley Cyrus - 2025 - Something Beautiful
When an artist puts a lot of thought and effort into what they hope might be their magnum opus only for it to be made unlistenable by those in charge of the mastering. Even after stripping away the applied 5dB mastering compression, the album is still relatively loud enough by today's standards, so why completely obliterated the dynamics?

It is a disgrace, but it seems like the industry, even audio engineers, don't see/hear the problem. No musical morals, nor integrity, in the modern music scene. But then I don't listen to Cyrus anyway & that's only partly because of the earbleeding insult to my appreciation of music. Whenever I hear this sort of thing I immediately turn it off & go elsewhere.
